Arthur J. Goodwin It is with great sorrow that we share news of Art Goodwin's death last night (August 16, 2004) in Oakland, California. His friends were with him until his passing. Art was 78, and had endured a year's bout with cancer with toughness and grace. A man of great passion and wit, his sales calls, cats and driving skills were legendary. Art's relationships with customers and colleagues routinely trampled on any distinction between business and personal life: his customers were his friends, and he admired their work and dedication. His colleagues at DSA were his family and trusted friends. Art had lived in California for over 30 years. He was a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science. A WWII veteran of the Navy, he attended Bethany College in West Virginia and the University of Maryland on the GI Bill. His passion for black and white photography grew from his own work into an incredible collection, which will now form the basis of the San Jose Museum of Art's photography collection. He was delighted by the exhibition several years ago at the museum of works “from the collection of Arthur Goodwin.” He was a founder and longtime supporter of CameraWorks and their charitable programs. Art was a founding Board Member of Creative Growth in Oakland, a revolutionary program of occupational art therapy for the disabled. Art enthusiastically worked for racial equality and justice all of his life. He loved the medical device industry and contributed his skills, energy and dedication. He quietly assisted several startups with small amounts of seed money, enabling engineers with a dream and no paycheck to survive a few months until funding. There will be no funeral at Art's express direction, so we hope that you will pause with friends over a good glass of wine, toast our great fortune for knowing one another and Mr. Goodwin, and tell a story about some time you spent with Art. Donations in his honor may be made to the Hospice Program who assisted us so well over the past year, to the American Civil Liberties Union or the American Cancer Society. Hospice Program Please accept our thanks for the calls, cards and love that flowed his way over the past year. Dave, Harriet and Barry Schnur |
